As a Hamilton, Ontario maternity photographer, one of the questions I get asked most often by expecting mamas is:

When is the best time to book My Maternity photos?

Whether you are located in Hamilton, Burlington, Oakville, Ancaster, Mississauga or the surrounding areas, I want to help you plan the perfect maternity photo session to beautifully capture this special stage of motherhood.

WHAT IS THE IDEAL TIMEFRAME FOR MY MATERNITY SESSION?

I recommend scheduling your maternity photoshoot between 28 and 34 weeks of pregnancy.

During this stage, your baby bump has the perfect round shape, and you’re usually still comfortable enough to move, and enjoy the experience.

WHAT IF I’M HIGH RISK OR EXPECTING TWINS/MULTIPLES?

That is a great and important question, and if this is your case, I suggest scheduling your maternity photography session a bit earlier, ideally between weeks 28 and 30, and definitely no later than 32 weeks.

If your doctor has recommended bed rest, it’s best to book as soon as possible.

It’s always better to take photos with a slightly smaller bump than to miss the chance altogether. Every pregnancy deserves to be celebrated and remembered.

HOW FAR IN ADVANCE SHOULD I BOOK A MATERNITY PHOTOGRAPHER?

Many maternity and newborn photographers book up 3-4 months in advance. So if you wait until your ready to have photos taken you might find your favourite photographer is already booked, especially during the busy spring and fall seasons.

That’s why I recommend starting your search early in your second trimester.

Here are a few steps to help you get started:

Browse local photographers’ websites and portfolios.

Follow your favorites on social media to get a feel for their style.

Once you’ve narrowed it down to two or three that really resonate with you, reach out for pricing, availability, and package details.

Booking early ensures you’ll have your preferred date and location reserved.

HOW LONG DOES A MATERNITY SESSION LAST?

Most of my maternity sessions last about one hour. This gives us plenty of time to create a relaxed, beautiful variety of images, perfect for capturing both stunning solo portraits and sweet moments with your partner and/or family.
